 Nano drug delivery refers to the use of nanotechnology to enhance the delivery and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals. This approach utilizes nanoparticles, which are typically between 1 and 100 nanometers in size, to transport drugs to specific sites in the body. 



Advantages

  1. Targeted Delivery: Nanoparticles can be designed to target specific cells or tissues, reducing side effects and improving therapeutic outcomes.
  2. Improved Solubility: Many drugs have poor solubility; nanoparticles can enhance the solubility and bioavailability of these drugs.
  3. Controlled Release: Nanocarriers can provide controlled release of drugs over time, maintaining therapeutic levels without frequent dosing.
  4. Enhanced Cellular Uptake: Nanoparticles can facilitate the entry of drugs into cells, particularly for large or polar molecules that typically struggle to cross cell membranes.

Types of Nanoparticles

  • Liposomes: Spherical vesicles that can encapsulate drugs, enhancing their delivery and reducing toxicity.
  • Polymeric Nanoparticles: Made from biodegradable polymers, these can carry drugs and release them in a controlled manner.
  • Inorganic Nanoparticles: These include metal nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles, and carbon-based nanoparticles, each offering unique properties for drug delivery.

Challenges

  • Manufacturing: Consistent production and scalability of nanoparticles can be challenging.
  • Regulatory Hurdles: Regulatory pathways for nanomedicines are complex and still evolving.
